The current Lord Lieutenant, Mr David Lindsay was appointed by Her Majesty the Queen in the autumn of 2009 and will retire on or before his 75th birthday.

The Lord Lieutenant is Her Majesty the Queen's representative in the County of Down. He is assisted by a vice Lord Lieutenant, Mrs Fionnuala Cook and up to 30 Deputy Lieutenants who all live in or near the County.

The Lord Lieutenant has a number of responsibilities, some which are, assisting with the Honours System, The Queen's Award for Voluntary Service, The Queen's Award to Industry, the creation of new Citizens and of course welcoming Members of the Royal family to the County.
