The Polish Wings over Northern Ireland.
On 9th September 2021 the Lord Lieutenant was invited to the Ulster Flying Club @ Newtownards to witness the arrival of a Spitfire bearing the Polish Air Force insignia from the 2nd World War. This aircraft has been painstakingly restored and apart from being absolutely immaculate, is in full flying condition.
Jerome Mullen OBE, The Lord Lieutenant, Adrian Donaldson DL & the Consul General of the Republic of Poland.
The Lord Lieutenant was received by the Consul General, Pawel Majewski @ the Ulster Flying Club & after a brief look at the Spitfire we were treated to a very interesting lecture by Maciek Bator who had organised the whole event & is the founder & project co-ordinator of "Your Freedom & Ours". We learnt about the vitally important contribution to our defence that was given to us by the 4 Polish Air Squadrons & the many other Polish men & women who gave their services during the 2nd world War.
Unfortunately, because of the poor weather forecast, the Spitfire had to fly in the day before & was already @ the airfield when we arrived & we were not therefore able to see it in the air. It will fly a circuit of Northern Ireland on Saturday & many of us may get the opportunity to see it in the air!
After the lecture we were able to inspect the Spitfire more closely & were treated to some tea, coffee & drinks!
